Guttering

Guttering That Carries Water Away from Your Home

Guttering, the eavestroughs and downspouts along your roof edge, collects everything that runs off your roof, and in Toronto that includes summer downpours and the spring melt of a winter's snow. When a trough leaks at a seam, sags away from the fascia or overflows because it is blocked or sloped the wrong way, the water falls straight down beside the house. It soaks the soil against the foundation, splashes up the walls and stains the brick, and in winter it freezes into ice on paths and steps.

Toronto Roofing & Masonry installs new eavestroughs and downspouts, replaces runs that are past repair and fixes the leaks, sags and blockages on systems that still have life in them. We set each run to the slope it needs to drain, fix it securely to sound fascia, and place the downspouts so the water discharges away from your foundation. Because we also handle drainage and foundation work, we can tell you where the water goes once it reaches the ground.

What's included

Guttering and Downspout Work We Cover

What the work covers, explained to you before anything starts.

  • New eavestroughs installed along the roof edge, sized and sloped for the area of roof they drain.
  • Replacement of corroded, split or badly sagging eavestrough runs.
  • Repairs to leaking seams, corners and end caps on troughs that are otherwise sound.
  • Re-hanging and re-sloping of troughs that hold water or pull away from the fascia.
  • New or relocated downspouts with extensions that carry water away from the foundation.
  • Blocked troughs and downspouts cleared so water can run through the system again.

Why choose us

Why Our Guttering Work Protects Your Foundation

Leaks Traced Before Parts Are Replaced

We find whether the problem is a failed seam, a poor slope or a blockage, so you are not replacing a whole run to fix one joint.

Slope Set for Toronto Downpours

Each run is pitched toward its downspout so heavy summer rain and snowmelt drain away instead of standing in the trough.

Downspouts Placed with Your Foundation in Mind

We position and extend downspouts so water lands clear of the walls, and we can address grading or weeping tile if water still pools.

Fascia Checked Behind Every Trough

Before troughs go back up, we check the boards they hang on, so a new eavestrough is not fixed to rotted wood.

Pricing

What Decides the Cost of Guttering Work

Eavestrough work is priced on what your house needs, and these factors shape your estimate:

  • The total length of eavestrough and the number of corners.
  • The number of downspouts and extensions required.
  • Whether existing runs can be repaired or need replacing.
  • The height of the roof edge and access around the house.
  • The condition of the fascia boards the troughs are fixed to.

The work

How Guttering Is Installed and Repaired

The main stages of the job, from the first look to the final check.

  1. System Assessment

We check each run for leaks, sagging and poor slope, look at the fascia behind it, and note where every downspout discharges.

  2. Repair or Replacement Estimate

We explain whether repair or replacement makes sense, discuss materials and colours, and give you an estimate before any work starts.

  3. Installation and Sloping

Troughs are hung on sound fascia and pitched to their outlets, seams and corners are sealed, and downspouts are fitted and extended.

  4. Water Test and Review

We run water through the system to confirm it drains, then we review the completed work with you and confirm everything has been done as agreed.

FAQs

Guttering Questions from Toronto Homeowners

Why are my eavestroughs overflowing?

The usual causes are a blockage from leaves or roof grit, a clogged downspout, a run that has lost its slope and holds water, or a trough that is too small for the area of roof it drains.

Can a leaking eavestrough be repaired, or does it need replacing?

A leak at a single seam or corner can often be resealed. If a run is corroded, split along its length or badly bent, replacement is usually the better choice.

How far from the house should a downspout discharge?

Far enough that the water drains away from the foundation rather than back toward it. The right distance depends on the slope of the ground around your home, which we check when placing downspouts.

Why do eavestroughs sag?

Sagging usually means the hangers have loosened or failed, the fascia behind them has softened, or the trough has been weighed down by ice and standing water.

Can eavestrough problems cause basement leaks?

Yes. Water that overflows or empties beside the house soaks the soil against the foundation, and it can work its way through cracks or gaps into the basement. Fixing the eavestroughs and downspouts is often the first part of keeping a basement dry.
