Shingle Roofing

Shingle Roofs Built for Toronto Weather

Asphalt shingles are the most common roofing material on Toronto houses. They suit most pitched roofs, come in a wide range of colours and profiles, and can be repaired a few at a time. A shingle roof is more than the shingles you see from the street, though. How it copes with heavy snow, ice dams and summer storms depends just as much on the layers beneath and the way the attic below is ventilated.

Toronto Roofing & Masonry re-roofs in asphalt shingles and repairs existing shingle roofs. A re-roof includes underlayment across the deck, ice and water protection at the eaves and valleys, new flashings and ventilation that lets the attic breathe. For repairs, we replace damaged shingles and look for the reason they failed. In both cases we explain the options that suit your home and provide an estimate for your approval first.

Shingle Roofing Services We Provide

What the work covers, explained to you before anything starts.

  • Re-roofing pitched roofs in asphalt shingles, with the old layers removed down to the deck.
  • Replacing missing, torn or curling shingles on an existing roof.
  • Laying underlayment over the deck as a second line of defence under the shingles.

Why choose us

The Way We Handle Shingle Roofs

Attention Below the Shingles

Underlayment, eave protection and flashings decide how well a shingle roof handles ice and meltwater, so they get as much care as the shingles on top.

Attic Ventilation Considered

An attic that cannot breathe overheats shingles in summer and feeds ice dams in winter, so we look at intake and exhaust venting as part of each shingle job.

Repairs That Address the Cause

When shingles keep blowing off or curling early, we look for the reason, such as poor ventilation or nailing, before replacing them.

Shingle Choices Set Out Clearly

Shingles vary in weight, profile and colour. We set out how they differ for a roof of your pitch and style, so you choose knowing what each one offers.

What Determines the Cost of a Shingle Roof

A shingle roof estimate is built around these factors:

  • The roof area, pitch and number of valleys, dormers and chimneys
  • How many old layers need removing and the condition of the deck
  • The shingle style you choose
  • The underlayment, eave protection and ventilation the roof needs
  • Flashing renewal around chimneys, walls and vents

How a Shingle Re-Roof Is Carried Out

The main stages of the job, from the first look to the final check.

  1. Roof and Attic Check

We look at the shingles, flashings, deck and attic ventilation to judge whether a repair or a re-roof suits your roof.

  2. Your Estimate

You receive an estimate setting out the work, the shingle options discussed and the details included, before anything begins.

  3. Tear-Off and Re-Roof

Old shingles are stripped, the deck is repaired where needed, then the underlayment, eave protection, flashings, shingles and ridge are installed.

  4. Clean-Up and Review

Old material and nails are cleared from the site, then we review the completed work with you and confirm everything has been done as agreed.

FAQs

Asphalt Shingle Questions Answered

How can I tell if my shingles are wearing out?

Common signs are shingles that curl at the edges or cup in the middle, bald patches where the granules have worn away, granules collecting in the eavestroughs, and cracked or missing tabs. Leaks or daylight showing in the attic are later signs that the roof needs attention soon.

What is ice and water protection?

It is a self-adhering membrane laid on the deck under the shingles at the eaves, in valleys and around penetrations. If an ice dam backs water up under the shingles, the membrane seals around the nails and helps stop that water reaching the roof deck and the house.

Should old shingles be removed before new ones go on?

Removing the old shingles lets the deck be checked and repaired, and allows underlayment and eave protection to be installed in full. Shingling over an old layer hides problems in the deck and adds weight, so a tear-off is usually the better approach.

Why does attic ventilation matter for a shingle roof?

Air moving in at the soffits and out near the ridge keeps the attic closer to the outdoor temperature. That reduces the snowmelt that leads to ice dams in winter, limits the heat build-up that ages shingles in summer and helps prevent condensation and mould on the underside of the deck.

Can new shingles be matched to my existing roof?

Often, but not always exactly. Shingle colours and styles change over time, and older shingles fade, so replacements may look slightly different at first. We find the closest available match and explain how it is likely to look before the repair goes ahead.
