How Your Roof Edge Protects the Whole House

The roofline is the edge where your roof meets the walls, and it does more work than its size suggests. Fascia boards carry the eavestroughs, soffit closes the underside of the overhang and lets air into the attic, and the troughs and downspouts collect rain and snowmelt and carry it away. When one part fails, the others tend to follow, and water starts finding its way into the walls, the attic or the basement.

Toronto Roofing & Masonry treats the roof edge as a single system. We look at the fascia, soffit, eavestroughs and downspouts together, find the cause of the problem rather than the symptom, and explain the repair or replacement that suits your home. Because we also handle roofing and foundation work, we can follow water from the top of the roof to the point where it lands beside your foundation.

Why choose us

Why Homeowners Bring Their Roofline Work to Us

The Whole Edge Assessed Together

Fascia, soffit and eavestroughs depend on each other, so we look at all three before recommending a fix to any one of them.

Water Traced to the Ground

We check where your downspouts discharge, because a working trough that dumps water against the foundation still leads to a wet basement.

Roof, Roofline and Foundations Under One Contractor

If a roof edge problem has caused damage elsewhere, to the shingles above or the foundation below, the same contractor can repair it.

Attic Airflow Considered

Where soffit is replaced, we explain how vented panels bring air into the attic and reduce the conditions that lead to ice dams.

Factors in the Cost of Roofline Work

The cost depends on how much of the roof edge needs attention, and your estimate is based on these factors:

  • The total length of fascia, soffit and eavestrough involved.
  • How much rotted wood needs replacing behind the troughs.
  • The height of the roof edge and access around the house.
  • The material and colour chosen for the replacement parts.
  • The number of downspouts and how far the water needs to be carried.

How We Handle Roofline Repairs and Replacement

The main stages of the job, from the first look to the final check.

  1. Roof Edge Assessment

We check the fascia for rot, the soffit for damage and gaps, and the eavestroughs for leaks, sagging and overflow, and note where the downspouts discharge.

  2. Options and Estimate

We explain what needs repairing or replacing and why, discuss the material choices, and give you an estimate before any work starts.

  3. Repairs Along the Edge

Damaged wood is replaced first, then the soffit and fascia are covered and the eavestroughs and downspouts are fitted and sloped to drain.

  4. Clear-Up and Review

Old materials are removed from the site, and we review the completed work with you and confirm everything has been done as agreed.

FAQs

Common Questions About Roofline Services

What is the difference between soffit and fascia?

Fascia is the vertical board along the edge of the roof that the eavestroughs are fixed to. Soffit is the panel underneath the overhang that closes it off, and vented soffit lets air into the attic.

Why do roofline problems lead to a wet basement?

When eavestroughs overflow or downspouts empty beside the house, water soaks the soil against the foundation. That water can then find cracks or gaps in the foundation wall and show up as damp or leaks in the basement.

Should eavestroughs be replaced at the same time as fascia?

If the fascia behind the troughs is rotted, the troughs have to come down for the board to be replaced. That is often a sensible moment to replace older or leaking troughs as well, rather than refitting them.

Can animals really get in through the soffit?

Yes. Squirrels, raccoons and birds often get into attics through damaged soffit or gaps where the soffit meets the fascia. Repairing the roof edge and closing those openings helps keep them out.

How does the roofline help prevent ice dams?

Vented soffit lets cold outside air into the attic, which keeps the roof deck cooler and reduces snow melting and refreezing at the eaves. Eavestroughs that drain without blockage also leave less standing water to freeze along the edge.
