A Patio That Stays Level Through Toronto Winters

A patio looks simple, but how it lasts depends on what sits underneath. Without enough compacted base, or with a surface that slopes toward the house, water collects, freezes and pushes slabs and pavers out of line. Within a few winters the patio rocks underfoot and puddles after every rain. We build new patios and rebuild failing ones by preparing the base and the fall of the surface before anything is laid.

You can choose concrete pavers, natural stone or poured concrete, and we explain the options that suit your home, your garden and how you plan to use the space. We also look at where water from the roof and downspouts lands, because a downspout emptying onto a patio is a common reason one end sinks. The aim is a level, well-drained surface that sheds water away from your walls.

What's included

What Our Patio Work Covers

What the work covers, explained to you before anything starts.

  • Planning the patio layout around your doors, garden and the way you use the space.
  • Excavating to the required depth and removing the old patio where one exists.
  • Laying and compacting a granular base in layers to resist settling and frost movement.
  • Setting a gentle fall across the surface so rain and meltwater drain away from the house.
  • Laying concrete pavers, natural stone or poured concrete, with edge restraints where needed.
  • Lifting and relaying sunken or uneven sections of an existing patio.

Why choose us

Why Homeowners Choose Us for Patio Work

Cause Found Before the Fix

We check why a patio has sunk, whether that is a thin base, poor fall or a downspout, before recommending a rebuild or a repair.

Surface Drainage Planned In

Every patio is given a fall that moves water off the surface and away from your foundation, rather than toward it.

Options Suited to Your Garden

We explain how pavers, natural stone and concrete differ in look, upkeep and repair, so you choose what fits your home.

Edges That Hold Their Shape

Edge restraints keep the outer pavers or stones from creeping outward, so the patio keeps its lines through Toronto freeze-thaw winters.

Every patio is priced on its own conditions, mainly:

  • The size and shape of the patio.
  • Your choice of pavers, natural stone or poured concrete.
  • Whether an old patio has to be removed first.
  • How much base material the soil needs.
  • Access to the back garden for equipment and materials.

How We Build Your Patio

The main stages of the job, from the first look to the final check.

  1. Planning the Space

We measure the area, check the levels and where water runs, and discuss the size, shape and material you want.

  2. Estimate and Agreement

You receive an estimate setting out the layout, materials and base work before anything starts.

  3. Base Preparation

The area is excavated, the base is laid and compacted in layers, and the fall is set for drainage.

  4. Laying and Handover

The surface is laid, joints and edges are finished, and we review the completed patio with you and confirm everything has been done as agreed.

FAQs

Common Patio Questions in Toronto

Why has my patio sunk in one corner?

Localized sinking usually means water has been washing out or softening the base in that spot, often from a downspout, a low point in the surface or a thin base. Lifting the area, correcting the base and dealing with the water source normally solves it.

Can you rebuild my patio using the existing pavers?

If the pavers are sound, yes. They can be lifted, the base rebuilt and the same pavers relaid. Any that are cracked or badly worn can be swapped for matching or complementary units where available.

Which patio material is easiest to repair?

Pavers are the simplest to repair because individual sections can be lifted and relaid. Natural stone can also be reset, while poured concrete usually needs a section cut out and replaced.

Should a patio slope away from the house?

Yes. A slight fall away from the walls lets rain and meltwater run off rather than collecting against your foundation, where it can find its way into a basement.

Can a new patio go over my old concrete slab?

Sometimes, if the slab is level, sound and drains well, but a cracked or sunken slab will carry its problems through to the new surface. We check the slab and explain whether it can stay or should come out.
