Masonry

Hardscaping Built for Toronto's Freeze-Thaw Seasons

Masonry around a house takes a beating in Toronto. Water gets under pavers and slabs, freezes and lifts them, then spring melt softens the ground and lets them settle unevenly. Road salt eats into concrete and mortar near the street. Toronto Roofing & Masonry builds and rebuilds patios, driveways, interlocking pavers, steps and stoops with that cycle in mind, starting with the base beneath the surface rather than the surface alone.

Each type of work has its own page below, so you can read about the job you have in mind. Because we also handle roofing and foundations, we can look at how water from your roof and downspouts reaches the ground, which often explains why a patio sinks or a driveway heaves near the house. For brickwork at roof level, see our chimney repairs page. Every job starts with an estimate before any work begins.

Why choose us

How We Approach Masonry Projects

The Base Comes First

Most sunken or heaving hardscaping fails below the surface. We check the base and drainage before proposing a fix, so the repair deals with the cause.

Roof Water Traced to the Ground

Water from your roof and downspouts often decides how a patio or driveway behaves. With roofing, foundations and masonry under one contractor, we can follow it from the roof edge to the ground.

Materials Explained for Your Property

We explain the paver, stone and concrete options that suit your home, its style and the way you use the space.

An Estimate Before Work Starts

You receive an estimate setting out the scope before anything is dug up, so you know what the job involves from the outset.

What Affects the Cost of Masonry Work in Toronto

The cost of a masonry project depends mainly on these factors:

  • The size of the area and the shape of the layout.
  • The material chosen: concrete pavers, natural stone or poured concrete.
  • How much excavation and new base material the ground needs.
  • Removal and disposal of the existing surface.
  • Access to the work area and any drainage that needs adding.

How a Masonry Project Runs from Estimate to Finish

The main stages of the job, from the first look to the final check.

  1. Site Assessment

We look at the existing surface, the soil, the slope and where water collects, and discuss how you want to use the space.

  2. Estimate and Layout

You receive an estimate with the layout, materials and base depth set out before any work starts.

  3. Excavation and Base

We dig out to the depth required, lay and compact the base in layers, and set the grade so water drains away.

  4. Laying and Final Review

The surface is laid and finished, the area is cleaned up, and we review the completed work with you and confirm everything has been done as agreed.

FAQs

Masonry Questions from Toronto Homeowners

Why do patios and driveways in Toronto sink or heave?

Water gets into the base, freezes and expands, then thaws and leaves voids. A base that is too thin, poorly compacted or graded toward the house makes this worse. Fixing it usually means lifting the surface and correcting the base.

Should I choose pavers, natural stone or poured concrete?

Each suits different homes and uses. Pavers can be lifted and relaid in sections, natural stone has a varied, traditional look, and poured concrete gives a continuous surface. We explain the options that suit your home before you decide.

Can existing pavers be reused?

Often they can, if they are intact. Pavers that have sunk or heaved can be lifted, the base corrected and the same pavers relaid. Cracked or badly worn units are replaced.

Does road salt damage masonry?

Salt speeds up freeze-thaw damage on concrete and some stone, causing the surface to flake or pit. Using salt sparingly and clearing slush helps. Where damage has started, we can advise whether repair or replacement makes more sense.

Do you repair brick chimneys as well?

Yes. Chimney brickwork, crowns and flashing are covered on our chimney repairs page, which sits with our roofing services.
